ABSTRACT

A close examination of the internal structure (anatomy) of the plant with a microscope will reveal how it is made up of different tissues. Each tissue is a collection of specialized cells carrying out one function, such as xylem conducting water. An organ is made up of a group of tissues carrying out a specifi c function, such as a leaf producing sugars for the plant. In the following chapter, the anatomy of the stem is illustrated and there is a comparable discussion of leaf structures in Chapter 8.
