ABSTRACT

The Sex Discrimination Act 1975 makes it unlawful to treat a female employee less favourably than a male employee was or would have been treated in comparable circumstances if the reason for the less favourable treatment is linked to gender. The Equal Pay Act 1970 protects employees from discrimination in relation to employees’ pay and other contractual terms. Protection under both Acts applies equally to men, although in practice more women than men are the victims of sex discrimination in the workplace.
