ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the thermal properties of materials. The whole area of relative movements between building materials is dealt here. The nature of heat has not always been understood only later was it found that heat is in fact atoms and molecules in motion. The science of thermodynamics deals with the nature of heat and its relationships with other forms of energy, such as mechanical, electrical and chemical. Temperature can be considered as a symptom of the presence of heat in a material; it is a measure or index of the thermal state of that material. Heat transfer is the science that seeks to predict the energy transfer that occurs between bodies as a result of temperature differences. The units of thermal conductivity will be expressed as a rate of heat flow per unit of thickness per degree of temperature difference.
