ABSTRACT

A focus rack is used in filmmaking to quickly shift attention from one area of the frame to another, underscoring an important plot point or visual detail important to the story. A focus pull is generally more subtle, used simply to keep a character in focus as he or she moves through the frame. Focus racks and pulls often look like Z translation to a solver. The 2D motion created by a focus pull is very subtle; an automated tracker may or may not pick it up. The camera tracking software creates locators in 3D space that correlate to the 2D points. A wireframe is a display setting in 3D software showing the outlines of an object, rather than displaying it in solid form. A plane or other piece of geometry with a checkerboard texture on it is a great way to evaluate the matchmove.
