In The Real World

Graduation is just a few days away. Everyone, including you, has senioritis. A group of friends are sitting at a table in the student union, when your friend, Adam, bursts in all excited. ‘I just got the best job offer,’ he exclaims. ‘I am going to be a department manager at a large resort.’ Everyone shares Adam’s excitement. Your friend Shannon asks Adam, ‘How did you land that one?’ Adam replies, ‘Well, let me tell you how I handled the interview.’

Adam grabs a soda and starts to tell you all about his job interview. He says, ‘After I got through the human resources screening, I went to a number of interviews with the operators.’ He pauses to back up, ‘As you guys know, I have been working line and supervisory jobs at resorts for four years now and I think those experiences really paid off.’ He continues, ‘So, this intimidating manager asks me, “If you were to come to work with us as a manager, what activities would you pursue during the first 30 days of employment?” ’ Adam says, ‘I looked him square in the eyes and said, “In the first 30 days, I should have the opportunity to complete a complete diagnosis of the operation’s performance relative to the established standards.” Adam continues, “This answer blew the guy away. Next, the guy asks, ‘Once you have done the diagnostics, what would you do in the course of running the operation?’ ” Adam continues, ‘I said to the guy, I would perform small incremental interventions to the systems to enhance productivity levels everyday.’ Adam just stares at you all just beaming and finally finishes with, ‘The guy looks at me and simply says, when can you start? The next thing I know, I have an offer letter in my hand.’
