ABSTRACT

An integral garage should be inspected and considered as part of the main building, but special thought should be given to the likelihood of fire spread from an integral garage to the living accommodation. The risk of fire from garages is not only due to the probable presence of flammable liquids, such as fuel in a car or lawnmower or stored paints, thinners and varnishes. Because cars are nowadays so much less prone to rusting and there is no longer the same need for covered garaging, owners are more likely to use garages for storage and other activities such as hobbies, which may also pose a greater risk of fire than normal domestic uses.
