ABSTRACT

Insects (butterflies, dragonflies) and arachnids (spiders, scorpions), members of the arthropod family of the animal kingdom, are for all intents and purposes the ‘most abundant terrrestrial life-form’ (Moris, 1998, p. 1). Indeed, the sheer multitude and adaptability of these animals has led Naskrecki (2005) to label them as the tiny majority. While most of the focus in this chapter is on insects some arachnids are discussed, therefore, the term insect will be used to denote both animal designations.
