ABSTRACT

The technologies available for handling contaminated soil vary depending on whether such material is being remediated or treated, reclaimed, used, reused, or recycled. Contaminated soil can undergo a particular remediation technology or combination of technologies prior to being reused or recycled. Remediation oriented technologies essentially reduce the amount of contaminants to levels acceptable for handling, prior to further treatment, disposal, or closure, assuming that acceptable regulatory levels have been reached or negotiated. The incorporation of contaminated soil into a variety of cold-mix asphaltic products can be physically accomplished by two means, mixed-in-place methods for larger quantities and windrowing for relatively smaller quantities. From the asphalt compartment, the material discharges into the mixing chamber. Inside this chamber are two counter-rotating paddle-wheel mixers that have adjustable rotating speeds. Windrowing is applicable for smaller quantities. This process involves coating the soil with an emulsion and simply mixing the materials in place.
