ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between process and tools for systems engineering. There is much interest in process maturity, yet there are many cases of processes being developed and deployed with little effect on the bottom line. Systems engineering (SE) methods bridge the gap between SE process and SE tools. Object Oriented Analysis and Design has been touted as the “new process” of doing systems engineering. Heuristics are especially useful when there is a lack of information which might normally be required when using a normal technique or method. By using the process, methods, tools, and environment (PMTE) mapping approach, one can determine where new methods are applicable in the processes a company uses and make sure that these methods are used in appropriate situations. The PMTE used on a project and within a company need to be established through engineering policy.
