ABSTRACT

Systems engineering (SE) is partly about providing a vision to the project of the ultimate goal for a system. That vision must be concerned with satisfaction of the end users. The SE Process has several inputs. The User Requirements Document (URD) contains the needs, hopes, desires, expectations, etc. from the end user’s perspective. The URD also describes the different types of users, special characteristics and limitations of each user type, and expected usage scenarios for the system or product under development. There are various other drivers to the SE Process. A Request for Proposal may be provided as part of a solicitation in the government acquisition process. The outputs of the SE Process depend on the nature of the project. An output could be a completely integrated and qualified system. This could be used at a higher level to be integrated into a larger system or it could be for customer or user acceptance testing.
