ABSTRACT

Experiential learning has been used to promote inter-professional learning, a concept that is currently much promoted. The advantages of experiential learning are that it can be used with all professions and it enables learning in the affective domain. Experiential learning has been defined as ‘a sequence of events with one or more learning objectives, requiring active involvement by participants at one or more points in the sequence. As healthcare education has a very practical basis, any time spent in the practice arena may well be regarded as experiential learning. Self-awareness is the cornerstone of counselling education, and consequently the use of experiential learning is the predominant teaching strategy in the field. The choice of activity may also be a disadvantage, and may well be dependent on the student’s preferred learning style. A. Rogers has commented that ‘experience forms the basis of all learning’, and from that learning comes the search for meaning.
