ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author discusses the term ‘lecture’, it automatically takes he back some years to his pre-registration nursing programme, when a class of around 200 students sat in a huge lecture theatre. Educational texts support the principle, confirming that a lecture involves one-way communication from a ‘teacher’ to a ‘student.’ The use of the lecture as a formal, structured, tutor-led session does allow for the transfer of information to students. The students were subsequently asked to note down their own thoughts reflecting the direct contact that they had had in clinical practice with people with personality disorder. In addition, the computer-based lecture is able to offer greater opportunities for student interaction with the materials, which is thought to be of benefit in ensuring deep learning. Several students made comments during the evaluation of the session that this was the first time they had encountered any positive opinions or attitudes about caring for individuals diagnosed with personality disorder.
