ABSTRACT

The use of the creative arts may well be dependent on the resources that are available in the learning environment. Creative arts such as photography and video recording require more equipment, some of which can be expensive. One of the immediate advantages of the use of creative arts in healthcare education is that it differs from traditional lectures. A decision might have to be made as to whether it is a creative self-expression session or a discipline-based art education programme. The humanities can be defined as ‘cultural representation of human experiences’, and therefore have an important place in healthcare education. The use of art and the humanities is not often taught to healthcare education teachers, and it has been left to those who have actually experienced it as a student to develop it as a teaching strategy. Another advantage of using creative art as a teaching strategy is that it helps to address the second domain because it encourages reflection.
