In today’s society, it is second nature for people to write checks; in fact, each year over 45 billion checks are passed for goods and services. The volume of nonsufficient funds checks is so great that law enforcement authorities cannot come close to handling them. In response to this, businesses have turned to companies which offer programs that will guarantee no losses on approved checks. These companies offer check approval and databases that offer businesses a way to minimize losses. A law enforcement officer may be able to access information from these businesses to assist in tracking their check fraud suspects. This chapter presents case examples of check fraud.
