ABSTRACT

Royal Mail is part of the UK Post Office Corporation, whose sole shareholder is the government. Royal Mail is more than just a business. It makes a crucial contribution to the British way of life, ensuring that even the most remote parts of the country are not isolated and helping to keep communities alive. Royal Mail operates in the communications market, transferring information, funds and personal messages nationally and internationally. Its mission is “to be recognized as the best organization in the world distributing text and packages.” The entire UK market is estimated at £30 billion, of which Royal Mail’s share is around 17%. In 1988, senior management held a series of “away days” to focus their priorities and developed clear statements on the desired state of Royal Mail. Strategy at Royal Mail is driven by the vision and business direction and goals, with their associated results, targets, and measurements.
