ABSTRACT

Military history in this period usually centres on Napoleon, dictator of France from 1799 until 1814, and again briefly in 1815, and the leading general in Europe during this period with a series of major victories, such as Ulm and Austerlitz in 1805, to his credit. Napoleon created the largest empire (of direct and indirect control) in Europe prior to that of Hitler’s Germany in World War Two. Impressive to his European contemporaries, Napoleon also had a wider impact with his invasion of Egypt in 1798.
