ABSTRACT

This chapter is concerned with the size and pattern of the town with regard to the homes of the people. Policy and public discussion of town planning have lost sight of the importance of the interdependence, with the result that the issues have become obscured. It seems useful to examine these two factors of the form of towns in the light of the journey to work. The analysis of the functions of the journey to work showed the merits of a large town from the point of view of the labour market, in the interests of both economic and family life. From the point of view of the journey to work in particular, but also of the lay-out of the town in general, the spatial expansion is of signal importance. The changed proportion between the number of inhabitants and the built-up area has been of great influence on the shape and functioning of the towns.
