ABSTRACT
The spinal cord is the part of the central nervous system that connects the brain to peripheral nerve output. It sits in the vertebral column, although the lowest parts of the vertebral column do not contain spinal cord, but a collection of spinal nerves known as the cauda equina. Some spinal nerves emerge between vertebrae that are lower down than the region of the spinal cord from which they originate.
