ABSTRACT

Fructose, derived mainly from the hydrolysis of sucrose by sucrase on the brush border membrane, is transported by another sodium-independent facilitative glucose transporter (GLUT5) that is present on both the apical and basement membranes. GLUT5 is energy independent, and has a low affinity for glucose. Also, like glucose and galactose, fructose can be transported across the basement membrane into the blood via GLUT2. These sugars are then transported to the liver via the hepatic portal vein.
