ABSTRACT

The Bullock Report (DES 1975: 7) made the following statement about the teaching of English:

English is rooted in the processing of experience through language. The pupil uses language to represent the experience to himself, to come to terms with it, to possess it more completely. It is a major part of the teacher’s skills to extend the range of that experience, at first hand and through literature, in such a way that new demands are made on language.
