ABSTRACT

Otto Klemperer, conducting a modern piece of music about which he did not have a high opinion, noticed a member of the audience walk out in the middle of the performance. Klemperer was heard to mutter, ‘Thank God somebody understands it’. The member of the audience, he might have supposed, had gazed through apparent complexity and seen nothing.
