ABSTRACT

Caricaturing the acrimony that was supposed to exist between two Conservative politicians, Harold Wilson said that whenever Harold Macmillan had been out of the country, his colleague R. A. ‘Rab’ Butler would meet him at the airport and shake him warmly by the throat. Such a rift has no place in the relationship between head teacher and governors and every effort should be made to ensure that the partnership is as trusting and productive as possible.
