ABSTRACT
H. L. Mencken said that a cynic was someone who, when he smelled flowers, looked round for the coffin. When applied to leadership, the cynical view is that the prospective leader sees which way the crowd is going, runs to the front of it and shouts, ‘Follow me!’ But there are many examples of schools where good leadership has positively influenced the lives of those who have been there.
