One of the best applications of Lyotard's philosophy of differends to a political context is by Mohammed Ramdani in his long introduction to Lyotard's La Guerre des Algériens. The book is a recent collection of Lyotard's essays on Algeria for Socialisme ou barbarie written between 1956 and 1963 (these are for the most part translated in Political Writings). Ramdani deploys Lyotard's philosophy of language and his insights into incommensurability skilfully to show that, even in his early work, Lyotard's political aim was to testify to irresolvable differences. In this case, this is the differend between colonial power and indigenous population.
