ABSTRACT
To build any structure, whether it is a chair or the Forth Bridge, it has to be constructed of a suitable material. That is a material that at least has the necessary structural properties. The two basic properties that are required are: strength and stiffness. Because the structure has to transfer forces it has to be strong enough, and because, on the whole the structure is expected to maintain its shape, it has to be stiff enough.
