ABSTRACT

Polly’s comments show one young artist drawing, talking and ‘thinking aloud’ in response to Browne’s The Tunnel. Both quotes demonstrate the role of thinking in the creative process, but Polly also captures that unique pleasure that young children can derive from drawing. In this chapter I will look at how the children in this study drew in response to Zoo, The Tunnel and Lily. Through their drawings, we can see them ‘thinking aloud’ and begin to understand more about the metacognitive processes involved in creating visual texts.
