ABSTRACT

It is almost futile to present statistics to demonstrate that girls out perform boys in MFLs. Many research findings read as truisms to teachers of MFLs, who need no reminder that girls’ results are better than those of boys. Table 3.1 (see Chapter 3) provides evidence of this at GCSE, and Ofsted (1999) demonstrates no shift in more recent years. There is Ofsted claim, a 16 per cent difference between boys and girls getting the highest grades. A glimpse into teaching rooms where MFLs are setted by ability, in A level classes and indeed in university lecture theatres simply serves to reinforce the view that not only are girls better at MFLs, but they also enjoy the subject more.
