Volcanoes and granite mountains

Igneous rocks are those thought to have cooled from a hot, molten state, the word being derived from the Latin word for fire. Of the many kinds of igneous rocks distinguished by petrologists, the two broad groups that dominate at the earth’s surface are basalt and granite. Basalts are of volcanic origin, but granites originate deep in the Earth’s crust.
