ABSTRACT

In today’s increasing competitive environment, timely delivery of data and/or information gives a construction firm some unique advantages in decision-making. The era of centralised databases has been characterised with problems of data consistency and/or quality of information. This is because different users require different dimensional views of data for decision-making in their respective functional areas. The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector has recognised the need for efficient management and delivery of information. In this context, information is classified as a key resource throughout the construction process. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) recognises the reliance of project teams on information, in the design, management and construction of projects. The following extracts from ISO illustrate the importance of information in construction.
