ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at organisational and leadership theory and the development of structures and a culture that can further integrate the project organisation and ensure its effectiveness. This leads to the concept of excellence or world class, which requires effective leadership. Project teams are usually made up from different functional departments within the same organisation or from other organisations who are brought together to tackle a specific project over a set period of time. The challenge in construction projects is to develop a culture that integrates the various organisations involved and ensures that there is a synergy built up in the team that also removes adversarial attitudes. This is even more important with ongoing changes in construction following Latham and Egan and the greater emphasis on integrated teams and collaborative relationships.
