Androgen therapy in women is a relatively new area. Postmenopausal androgen replacement is becoming increasingly widespread. This is despite the lack of clear guidelines regarding the diagnosis of androgen insufficiency, optimal therapeutic doses, and long-term safety data. Furthermore, the medical community is still debating on what recommendations to make about hormone replacement therapy in general after the publication of Heart and Estrogen Replacement Study129 and the Women’s Health Initiative Study.130-133 Therefore, any counseling about the androgen therapy should consider the fact that there are no long-term studies with adequate power to determine the potential effects of androgens on cardiovascular system, central nervous system and breast and endometrial cancer risks.
