ABSTRACT

GnRH pulses from hypothalamic peptidergic neurons located in the arcuate nucleus of the medial basal hypothalamus and the preoptic area of the anterior hypothalamus stimulate pulsatile secretion of LH and FSH from gonadotrophs in the anterior pituitary. The number of GnRH receptors on the cell surface of gonadotrophs is influenced by the chronicity of GnRH pulses with increasing numbers of receptors seen with shorter pulse intervals but a decrease in receptors with continuous stimulation.
