ABSTRACT
Investment both at home and overseas played an important part in the growth of the British economy. The modern Stock Exchange was founded in 1773 and enabled financiers and industrialists to raise money for future investment. With the development of the economy the number of loans raised steadily increased. An important development was the rise of insurance companies to protect fixed assets and people. Amongst the most important was Lloyd’s marine insurance, founded in 1692.
