ABSTRACT

The discovery of Borna disease virus (BDV) specific antibodies in sera of psychiatric patients encouraged many scientists all over the world to investigate a possible correlation of psychiatric disorders with BDV infection. However, after almost 20 years of research in this field, many reports with controversial views have resulted in uncertainty as to whether BDV is indeed a causative agent for some psychiatric diseases. In the following chapter, we critically summarize the current knowledge on BDV infection in man, including methods used for diagnosis of BDV infection.
