ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the development of an understanding of meaning (semantics) in language. I examine meaning and its development in terms of what is meant by the term ‘meaning’ and then discuss labelling, packaging, networking, idiom, grammatical aspects of meaning, and meaning relations. The chapter then looks at difficulties in each of these aspects in turn. I consider identification and assessment, focusing on National Curriculum assessments, screening and testing procedures, liaison between the teacher, the SENCO and the SALT, vocabulary assessment, and word elicitation tasks for idiom.
