ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the use of language, pragmatics. I present various definitions of pragmatics. The chapter then considers five areas:
◆ certain basic knowledge and skills associated with pragmatics; ◆ grammatical sense in language use; ◆ social and linguistic sense; ◆ conversational skills in terms of such features as introducing a topic of conver-
sation, maintaining it and concluding it; ◆ semantic-pragmatic issues.
