ABSTRACT
This chapter seeks to define autism and ASD. The triad of impairments associated with autism – social isolation, communication difficulties and insistence on sameness – is explained, along with how these impairments interact and affect learning. I consider the causes, prevalence and identification and assessment of ASD.
