ABSTRACT
In considering the nature of grammar, this chapter distinguishes ‘syntax’ and ‘morphology’, both of which are explained. I consider difficulties in the development of grammar. The chapter looks at the identification and assessment of difficulties with grammar with reference to: National Curriculum expectations; screening and standardised assessment; liaison between the teacher, the SENCO and the SALT; assessment and monitoring through descriptive grammar; and calculating a child’s mean length utterance.
