The changing nature of rented housing

In 1900 over 90 per cent of people in Britain rented their homes privately, ranging from the rich to the poor. In that year 150,000 new homes were built in this country, almost all by private land-lords. But even before the outbreak of the First World War the number of new homes being built fell sharply-to a level of only 50,000 in 1913.
