ABSTRACT

Early aggressive therapy to optimize cardiac function, blood pressure and oxygen delivery (central venous pressure of 8-12 mmHg, mean arterial pressure of more than 65 mmHg, and central venous oxygen saturations of more than 70%), including infusions of colloid or crystalloid, vasoactive and/or inotropic agents and transfusions of red blood cells to increase oxygen delivery during the first 6 “golden hours” of septic shock are associated with an absolute decrease of 15% in mortality rate compared with less aggressive standard resuscitation therapy.
