ABSTRACT

In this book I have presented an analysis of some of the major researches evaluated in Children Under Five; educational research and evidence (Clark 1988). I have also included several of my researches from the previous edition of Understanding Research in Early Education (Clark 1989); this enables me to extend the discussion into the early years in the primary school. Recently completed and ongoing research is also considered. My aim is to encourage readers to see research as a continuous process. It is worth identifying the extent to which the issues raised and warnings

given over the years since 1988 are still of relevance for early education. In 1988 my evaluation of research relevant to the education of children under 5 years of age was published (Clark 1988). The following year there was a report from a House of Commons select committee, and a further select committee report in 2000 (House of Commons 1989 and in 2000). The report of the Rumbold Committee, Starting with Quality, was published in 1990 (DES 1990). The following are among the issues that I identified in 1988.
