ABSTRACT

Patients with chronic compartment syndrome may have other painful leg conditions simultaneously. Therefore, discussion of differential diagnosis of patients with chronic leg pain is important. Leg pain of patients has many etiologies. Each of the leg tissues may be a source of pain. Pain may originate from bone, periost, muscle, fascia, tendons, arteries, veins, and nerves. The tissues are closely gathered in the leg and overlap each other. Diagnosing the causes of chronic pain in the leg may be difÞcult when patients have few speciÞc symptoms and signs at rest. Therefore, clinical investigation following an exercise test is helpful. The test may include work on an ergometer, running, or any speciÞc activity that elicits the typical pain or dysfunction in the patient.
