ABSTRACT
The classical Russian idea of the millennium, as noted by Nikolai Berdyaev, was messianic nationalism: “Messianic consciousness is more characteristic of the Russians than of any other people except the Jews. It runs all through Russian history right down to its communist period” ([1947] 1992:26).
