ABSTRACT
The history of the jubilee traces back into Hebrew and Roman Catholic origins. Attempts of radical reformers and millenarians of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to revive the ideas of the Hebrew origins failed, whereas the affirmative concept of historical jubilees became generally accepted. In stressing the idea of historical continuity, the habit of celebrating jubilees shaped a vivid counterpart to the millenarian experience of time.
