ABSTRACT

Contents In prokaryotes and eukaryotes, the binding of proteins to specific deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences is important to the regulation of many cellular processes, such as replication, recombination, repair, and transcription. Gene expression in eukaryotic cells is regulated by cis-acting regulatory elements and trans-acting regulatory factors that control transcription initiation of the genes. Over the years, many DNA sequences responsible for this regulation have been identified, and special proteins binding to these regulatory sequences have been classified.
