The Mishnah’s record of teachings relating to death, burial and mourning was clearly deficient. Though, in an unsystematic fashion, the Mishnah included significant details, it would be difficult for even ancient students of the document to reconstruct complete rituals based upon its selective account. In the matter of mourning, in particular, those looking to the Mishnah for direction would find themselves without an adequate foundation.
