Concepts of neonatal requirements for amino acids have changed as a greater understanding of biochemical and physiologic development has occurred over the last 30 years. In particular, recently more attention has been given to the role of nutrients in cognitive development. This emphasis has been stimulated by the numerous studies that have demonstrated improved cognitive performance in breastfed infants; such performance has been noted to persist into adulthood.
