The modern trend in the field of communications toward mobile terminal equipment has attracted, in recent years, the increasing interest of a number of researchers in industry and academia. One of the current topics in this research and application area is adaptive filtering for acoustic echo cancellation.1,2 In fact, high-quality mobile services require compensation for acoustic echoes using effective, low-cost adaptation algorithms.3,10,11,19 Application-oriented research topics range from the development of specific adaptation algorithms,17 including, in particular, control of the adaptation step size and realization of efficient implementations, to other relevant aspects such as double-talk control, background noise reduction, and de-reverberation.6
