ABSTRACT

Imagine yourself in your office opening your mail A life insurance company has sent you a request for a former client’s records. You haven’t seen this client in 10 years but know that his inactive record is still in your files. You look at his record. It is a mess. Mainly scribbles that don’t make sense, even to you. Even though your former client has given consent for release of his records to the company, and you might be able to rely on your memory to write a report to the company, you don’t want to have to write one more report this week to another third party. Hey…what about destroying the record since it’s been a decade since you last saw him? How long must you keep records anyway? What do you do? You pick up the phone to consult a colleague.
