R.G.Collingwood (1889-1943) did not much care for seeing the label ‘Idealist’ attached to himself. Commenting on the reception of his Speculum Mentis (1924), he observes in An Autobiography (1939) ‘any one who had been intelligent enough to see what I was trying to say would have realized, had he not been grossly ignorant, that it was neither “usual” nor “idealistic”.’
